The branch of science known as dentistry has become very famous in the past few years for the growing cases of dental problems and anomalies. Dental disorders are increasing day by day in the context of the modern society and so the need for trained dental hygienists is also increasing rapidly. This particular branch deals with the diagnosis, treatment and curing of the various disorders concerning the teeth, mouth or any significant part of the human body. The hygienists are a very important part of the treatment of the infected patients and hence are an integral part of the branch of science called dentistry.

A Dental hygienist is a trained professional whose work is to assist the dentists in the treatment of any patient. They help the dentists in every way possible and play a very important role in the treatment and surgery of the patients. The people working as the dental hygienists mainly perform normal duties towards the patients. They remove the various deposits from the teeth of the patients; inform the patients about the good dental habits which will help them to stay in a good dental condition and various other preventive measures. It is also there task to carry out x rays on the teeth of the patients in order to determine the level of the disorders present and helps in the diagnostic process. They are a very important part of the surgery and treatments carried out on the patients. Dentistry uses a variety of equipments and instruments to carry out jobs like hand and rotary instruments, ultrasonic devices for polishing the patients’ teeth and removal of stains, tartar and mainly cavities.

The x ray machines take care of the digital photos required for proper diagnosis. They also use fillings and crowing to restore lost teeth for the patients. Syringes are used for local anesthesia applied on patients for proper uninterrupted treatment. Dental hygienists also helps in removing the sutures from the patients’ teeth, applying the tropical anesthetic element or various artificial cavity preventive agents like fluorides and various other chemicals to the teeth of the infected patients, removing the excess amount of cement which is generally used in the filling process, and also to place the dental dams in order to isolate infected teeth for the treatment of the patients. The works of the dental hygienists are very important for dentistry and hence they are paid handsomely for their services.

A proper qualification is very necessary for any job as a dental hygienist and it generally determines the post and salary for the aspiring candidates. They have to be very skilled and qualified to carry out such an important job and hence the candidates work very hard. A high school diploma and the marks of the college entrances are necessary for the admission of the candidates in the proper institutions. They take courses in related subjects like botany, biology, mathematics, chemistry and anatomy which are very helpful in their line of work. The admission criterion differs from one school of dental hygiene to another. There are 301 well known dental schools which are supported by the CODA (Commission on Dental Accreditation) and they are the prime centre of education for the aspiring candidates. The institutes offer an associate degree or a certificate of bachelor’s degree or master’s degree which are very helpful in the field of work. The degrees ensure knowledge in research, clinical practice in public and teaching in various health programs. They are taught about the necessary subjects like anatomy, nutrition, radiograph, histology, micro biology, pathology, dental materials, clinical dental hygiene and various social and various behavioral sciences.

The dental hygienists mainly gather their experience from the nursing homes and hospitals where they work under the vigilant eyes of the dental experts and the hospital administrative. They start their training as interns and gradually learn the tricks of the trade from the senior dentists. New assistants are generally taught how to treat the patients, how to carry out the daily duties, are taught the various names and functions of the instruments, and also how to manage the office smoothly. This boosts their knowledge and confidence a immensely and helps them to carry on with their work without any further assistance

A license is very necessary for the dental hygienists to practice in the nursing homes and hospitals. The budding new generations of dental hygienists have to pass the exam issued by the CODA in order to get the license which enables them to practice in any state independently of under any well known hospital or nursing home.

The profession of dental hygienists is one of the most growing professions in the world and as a result, there is huge scope for new candidates to get lucrative jobs in this sector.
