Registered Medical Assistant

A medical assistant is one who works under the supervision of a doctor, or any other medical personnel, and a registered medical assistant is one who is certified by some institution as a person eligible for any medical assistant job. The occupation of a registered medical assistant is very popular in the United States of America.

Registration as a medical assistant is not mandatory, but it is always better to have a certification, because that opens new boulevards to employment. It is quite comprehensive that, when a well reputed hospital is hiring medical assistants, they would prefer registered medical assistants, since registration itself is a proof of the quality of the medical assistant. A registered medical assistant has more job security. However in many countries registration of medical assistants is mandatory.

To get a registration, the candidate has to acquire a graduation degree from any of the Medical assistant training program acknowledged by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP). There are many bodies offering registration, such as American association of Medical assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Healthcareer Association, etc. Then you are eligible to take the test to get the registration. To take the test an appointment for the test has to be made. The request is processed and notification about the date of the exam is given three weeks before the exam. The test can also be taken online. However it is essential that the candidate sitting for the registration exam has passed out from an accredited school in the past 3-5 years. This is done because the medical field is always changing. In another scenario, took keep the already registered medical assistants up to date with the latest medical knowledge, classes are continued occasionally even after the registration. In some cases, the employer sponsors the continued education so that one can get his registration done. In short, the registration/certification has to be always kept up to date.

Many types of registration for medical assistants exist, some of them being discussed below.

  • Certified Medical assistant (CMA) – This registration is presented by the AAMA. The registration has to be renewed every 5 years. The registration can be acquired by making an appointment with them and giving the exam.
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – AMT offers this registration. However to keep this registration valid, one has to pay a nominal fee annually, and continue some specific education hours every three hours.
  • Certified clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – This registration shows that you are skilful enough to conduct various clinical procedures like pathological tests. A little fee is however charged for taking the exam.

Medical assistants work under the direct supervision of the doctors. Registered Medical assistants are allowed to conduct advanced procedures such as conducting X-rays, giving injections, etc… Pupils may specialize even further after getting the registration. This field of work as a registered medical assistant, is much in vogue now, and is predicted to be one of the fastest growing occupations in the US by 2018.
